Brain Injury Diagnosis after an Accident

Accident victims benefit from getting prompt medical care after an accident. In some cases, they have suffered traumatic brain injuries (TBI), but the impact is not apparent until days or months afterward. Here is what people should do to have their brain injuries diagnosed.

Get Medical Help

If there has been any type of force of trauma, you should see a neurologist. Even if you don’t feel injured, you should still get checked out extensively. Many people don’t realize that they have suffered a TBI because the effects take some time to surface. Getting a prompt diagnosis could start the process of treating the injury. Any delays in treatment could result in the condition worsening.

How Brain Injuries Are Diagnosed

Doctors could use the following tests to diagnose a brain injury:

Glasgow Coma Scale – This is the quickest test used to diagnose brain injury. It examines the symptoms as opposed to looking at the brain itself. The accident victim would be scored on things such as eye movement and ability to respond to verbal commands. This may be given immediately following the accident and again in the days afterward.

CT Scans – This is an imaging technique that takes a picture of the skull and brain. It is used to diagnose short-term injuries such as brain bleeds.

MRI – The magnetic resonance imaging test will give a more detailed look at the brain. This checks for brain activity. While a CT scan is used right after the accident, the patient will receive an MRI in the days after to diagnose the extent of the injury.
